Fake Free Time Friday

Today's title stems from our current activity.  This may feel like like free time, but we are actually drawing and measuring angles. Actually, we are creating Anglemals. Of course, this means that we are creating animals out of angles.  You knew that!

This evening at home....

  • Read! I should see at least 2 reading sessions. This means 40 minutes in total. Record on your Gold Card.
  • Catch up on ST Math.  Your child should be fast approaching 75%.
  • If you are finished with ST Math, do some IXL 5th Grade.

NEW CAC DATES!!!!
  • Our CAC Show is on May 19th.
  • May 8th is our first day in the CAC. Parents, we hope to see you there!
  • We will be using LOTS of brown grocery bags.  Start saving!
The Spring MAPS schedule will be available soon. We will most likely be testing the week after the CAC. As soon as I know, I will let you know!

Thankful For Time Off Thursday

We are in the final stretch over here.  We will spend the last hour of school diving into a new Go Math lesson, because it is not Spring Break yet!  I am not assigning any regular homework over the break, but I do expect that kids will keep up with their independent reading and want them to log their minutes/pages on the Gold Card.

Need to Know

  • Parent Teacher Conferences are Wednesday, April 19. Many families have already signed up for a time. Here is the link:   Click Here
  • Results from today's Math test are available on Think Central. To receive partial credit, please turn in a written explanation, with examples and labels, of how to arrive at the correct response. I will accept corrections any day the week of 4/17.
  • 40 Book Challenge: Congratulations to Samantha, Hambalat, Kaelyn and Brianna. Each has met the 40 Book Challenge, and each is on the way to reading more than 60 books this school year.
  • If your child is not close to 75% on ST Math, please try to get there!
  • Each student will need a protractor for classwork and homework next week.  We will be measuring angles. The clear ones are usually easier to use.
  • The Spring MAPS Testing window opens on May 15th. I will send home the schedule soon. If you are looking for ways to boost your child's scores, I recommend IXL Disney has purchased both reading and math. The best way to do better on Reading and Language tests is to actually read. Just read, people!

P.S. Dhiren just helped me edit this post's title. Thanks for the idea, Dhiren!

I Wonder Wednesday

Today's title is inspired by today's Fur Trading Activity.   After a bit of research using links I posted on Google Classroom, partners were able to meet and develop questions about the Fur Trade in Illinois and the Great Lakes Region.  Today, we spent some time answering those questions.

We also...

  • began our new read aloud: Traders In Time.   Guess what it's about?  This is a new book for me too! I am really excited to get started.
  • spoke a little French. Oui!
  • went over last night's math homework and worked on the Chapter 10 Review.
  • shared and began publishing our Maniac Magee ballads. Not ballots.
  • did some ST Math
  • played a !Kahoot based on this week's story: I Could Do That.

This evening at home...
  • study for tomorrow's Chapter 10 Test
  • complete the Idioms page in the packet.
  • complete one other page, your choice, in the packet.
  • read and get a signature.
Sign up for a Parent Teacher Conference. Conferences are Wednesday, April 19th. If you can't make it to school that day, please write me a note or email so that we can reschedule. I am happy to meet with you on another day, or schedule a phone conference. Click on the link below.

Tremendous Tuesday

This evening at home...

  • please complete the double-sided math work. We will get a bit more practice with patterning. Please focus on describing the patterns using WORDS. No blanks!
  • read a book of your choice for 20 minutes or longer.
  • write a solid paragraph about what you've read. I want to hear your ideas, not just a summary.  Here is a sample to get you started.
In  this part of the book ________(briefly describe the action.)________.
 I  think that_______, because....
This reminds me of_____, because....
This proves that _________
If it were me, I would_________
I wonder why________.
Maybe, ____________.

I sometimes like to annoy your children with songs.  This is one of my favorites. Thank you, Sabrina and Nyla, for the inspiration.  Enjoy, or in Ryan's case, cringe.

Mathtastic Monday

Today's Math lesson was all about patterns. Fake easy! We stumbled through some difficult problems today, and I am happy to report that there was no tearing- of -the -hair/crying/stomping/throwing-of-the-paper or general defeatism.  Every kid in the class had to go back to the drawing board several times. The great news about this is that these kids exhibited loads of persistence!  Bravo 201!

Today we......

  • discussed how and why the French explored North America, claiming land and potential Fur Trade profits in the name of New France.
  • worked with partners to discuss the key points about the Fur Trade
  • worked with this same partner to take a close look at the reading and answer questions.
  • attended an assembly in the CAC that featured Spanish Guitar and Flamenco. Ole.
  • worked on the aforementioned pattern problems
  • went to lunch and recess.
  • went to Library.

This evening at home...
  • please sign up for a Parent Teacher Conference. Many are already on the schedule. Thank you!
  • Click here to sign up!
  • read I Can Do That  in Journeys.
  • complete the Analyze Text questions
  • do the HW and Practice for Go Math 10.7
