Hello Team 201 Families!
This morning, we begin a Social Studies unit that will see us through June. Our Illinois unit is off to a flying, or
walking, start. We will learn about how America was populated during the Ice Age. Right now, we are learning about how hunters and gatherers from Eurasia
walked across the Bering Land Bridge. We will then study Pre-Columbian people, focusing on the great civilization at Cahokia in what is now central Illinois. Our studies will introduce us to the many Native American tribes that called this land home. We will learn about the fur trade, the French and Indian War, the Revolutionay War and the Westward Expansion that led to Illinois Statehood. We will examine all of these topics through an Illinois lens. As you can probably gather, this is one of my favorite units of study.History was my college major, and I believe that studying the past is important!
To help us stay organized, I would like each student to have a
composition notebook for the Illinois unit. If most families are able to purchase a notebook, this will help reduce my spending. They are available at most dollar stores, office supply stores, etc, often for less than a dollar!
Testing begins tomorrow! Please arrive a few minutes before 7:30 so that your child can get organized in plenty of time.
This evening at home...
-read for 25 minutes or more! This is your only official "reading" homework.
-complete the hwp for Go Math lesson 9.7
-Make sure to bring a book to school. If you are almost finished with one, bring two! There will be LOTS of time to work toward the 20 book Challenge.
