On Fire With Fractions Friday

There was some strong input for today's title, but I think that the final credit goes to Erick. Sarit suggested Free Reading Friday, or something similar, which also would be a good title for today.

Today we...

  • watched some of our classmates get homework passes for getting a written confirmation about last night's reading. I am sorry that I have to be a stickler about requiring the note, but I do.  We spent a great deal of time on Thursday about "owning" responsibility for tasks. 
  • read the Article of the Day and responded in the BOK
  • spent some time reworking some of last night's very confusing homework.
  • continued research on our African American History project. We will finish these up in class early next week.
  • went to Tech with Ms. Kostecki. The kids are collaborating on some very cool Minecraft design projects.
  • read, and ate a quick snack.
  • circulated through Guided Reading Groups/Stations. Kids were either...working on Text Structure, reading and discussing with me, or reading independently.
  • revisited the whole fraction thing.
  • worked some more on fractions.
  • did some more fractions.
  • fractions.
  • ate lunch.
  • went to recess.
  • took out our "agendas/assignment notebooks" and discussed homework expectations. 
  • retook the Water Cycle Kahoot. All kids scored much better the second time around...
  • went home!

This weekend at home...
  • read for one hour or more. This can be done in one or two separate sessions. The total requirement is one hour.
  • log it.
  • get written, parental confirmation on the Gold Card, in the agenda, or on your arm: I can confirm that ____read for an hour this weekend.  Signature.
  • IXL is not official hw but is always encouraged. Don't forget that we also have IXL Reading!
  • Think about/work on/ read for the Book Buffet.
Parents, I know how busy you are! It is your child's responsibility to remember to read and to ask you for the confirmation note.  I encourage them to check the blog when they get home to confirm that they have completed each task.  Most kids do need some support with this.

Thinking Teamwork Thursday

Today we spent some time brushing up on routines and transitions. We need to get to our reading and math groups quickly so that we are ready to learn. I think that we have got it!

This evening at home....
-complete the hw and practice for Go Math lesson 7.8. This one is kind of tricky! Use your classwork notes to help you!
-read your Book Buffet book or another book of your choice for 25 minutes. Bus reading does not count. Parents, please write a quick note on paper or on the Gold Card that reads, " I can visually confirm that my child read for 25 minutes."

Riding Freedom Friday

Hi Parents and Families,

Please disregard the previous post regarding Tuesday volunteers. The pod does not need help this Tuesday!


  • Don't forget that in honor of Presidents Day,  there is not school on Monday.
  • Due to a PARCC practice test, we will not be able to visit the American Writers Museum next week. We will reschedule this trip and hope to get there in April.

  • finish the Riding Freedom Article. You are reporting on Charlotte's stormy ride. Most kids finished this in class.

Thinking Olden Times ( Like An Author) Thursday

Today we....

  • read the Article of the Day and responded in the BOK. This week's topis is the Geography of Africa.
  • went to Gym
  • met in our Reading Groups and worked on Riding Freedom Newspaper articles
  • got our the Readers Notebooks and talked about PIE"D.
  • in math groups, we relearned how to Simplify fractions and worked on subtracting fractions with like denominators.
  • ate lunch and went outside for recess
  • created the blog post together(happening now)
  • watched a Science Fusion video about Water (about to happen)

This evening at home...
  • Please check the Gold Card
  • 7.4 hw and practice
  • Vocabulary work: Select one option A) Write a sentence for each vocab word. The words can be found in Journeys.  B) Write a short story that includes all of the words. This can be a silly story.
  • **Parents, please get a "visual" on the homework. Hearing "I'm finished" is usually not enough.

Today we talked we discussed Riding Freedom and compared and contrasted life in the 1800 and life now.

This evening at home....

  • finish up the Valentine Box/Bag/Paper
  • complete Go Math 7.3
  • Read and get a parent signature to prove that you read for 1/2 hour!
  • Get the Chapter 5 Math test signed.
  • Show your parents the Book Buffet Project. Please sign, date and return the bottom portion of the packet to indicate that you have seen and read the guidelines.

Don't forget that we will have time to pass out Valentines tomorrow afternoon. There are 28 kids in our class.

Making Maple Syrup Monday

It was a beautiful day at the North Park Village Nature Center! Thanks for sending your kids all bundled up today.  We hiked in the snow, we learned about the "Sugar Bush." Thank you to all the parents who joined us today!

Reminders/Notes...
-Please note that the "figurative language" Valentines box is not optional. If you do not have a box or bag at home, just decorate a sheet of paper, making sure to include all of the elements. Second, and third, copies of the directions were handed out today.
-Report Cards are going home today! Please sign the card and return to indicate that you have seen the card. I will then give it back! I wish that we had parent-teacher conferences every quarter. If you would like to discuss your child's progress, please do not hesitate to call or write. We can hold a phone or a face to face meeting.
-There are 28 students in our class!
-Please assemble Valentines at home. We won't have time to do this in class.
-A second note went home today regarding free after school tutoring. It is not too late to sign up. The note is inside the report card envelope.

  • read, and log it!
  • please complete the evens for Go Math 7.2, classwork only
  • please finish the NE brochure.  Captions should be 2-3 informative sentences.
  • make sure you have read Riding Freedom.

Snow Day Tomorrow!

Just in case you have not heard......
Tomorrow, Friday, February 9 is an official

I am glad that you kids won't have to wait at the bus stop!  We checked the cubbies for snow boots this afternoon. I hope you got yours!  As I mentioned today, I do have a few tasks for you this weekend!

1.Yes, you still need to do tonight's Text to Text and math homework. I will expect to see it on Monday.
2.If possible, please log on to Think Central and take the Life and Times of the Ant test. I will not get a chance to assign it until later tonight or tomorrow morning. You may, and SHOULD, use the text to help you with the comprehension. This will keep us on pace to begin something new next week.
3. Please read the next story, Riding Freedom, in Journeys. Be prepared to complete an entrance ticket. You may count this reading on your log.
4. Please do the evens for lesson 7.2. This is all about adding "unit fractions." We talked about it today. I am adding a video to help you understand the material.  If you want to do all of the problems, I will have an alternate/challenge activity for you on Monday.

Kids, if you are bored tomorrow, why not work on your genius project or your Valentines Box/bag?  The links for the Genius project are on the blog. Teach us!!!

A few kids have not turned in trip money or forms.  Our trip is on Monday!  You may bring in the $6.00 and a "permission note." on Monday.

We will be outside, learning how to "tap" trees and about the maple syrup process. Bundle up for this unique opportunity. Boots, hats, scarves and mittens are a must!!  


No need to bring a special lunch, as we will be back at school in plenty of time for lunch. Just do your regular thing.  Prepare  for a surprise "tasting"event when we return to school.

From tree to syrup. Creating delicious maple syrup is a long and time consuming process. No wonder this stuff is so expensive!

Thinking Snow Thursday

This evening at home...
-Read The Ant and the Dove in Journeys.
-Complete the Text to Text activity on page 431. Your response should be about a paragraph. It should include examples from both texts.
-Go Math hw and practice for lesson 7.1.
-The Northeast Brochure is due on Monday. Kids are bringing home the NE magazine and the template. Most have made a strong start. Don't forget: captions should be informative and 2 or more sentences.  Spelling counts! Neatness counts!


Good to Know
- the circled problems in the math book were classwork. They should be finished.
-we have a field trip on MOnday!!Dress for the weather. We will be outside!! We will eat lunch at school.
-If there is a snow day tomorrow, I will be posting some math and reading work.
-Report Cards go home tomorrow.
-Math tests will be sent home tomorrow.
-We will take the Ants reading test tomorrow. There will not be a spelling test. If we do not have school on Friday, please log on to think central and take the test. You may use your book for the comprehension, but not for the vocabulary.

Water Wednesday

Today we....

  • read the Article of the Day on Readworks and added to our Book of Knowledge.
  • worked on our Northeast brochures
  • took the Chapter 6 math test
  • went to library
  • went to the Science Lab, where we made it rain. Sort of.
  • caught up on some reading work and spent a bit more time going over the math test.
  • ate lunch and went to recess.
  • held our first Genius Hour. Our topic is Water.

This evening at home....
  • read and annotate the article.
  • answer the questions.
  • on the paper provided, write a summary.Summaries should be more than 5 sentences, but less than 10.
  • draw a picture and caption. Captions are informative. They share facts and details that are not contained in the summary.
  • math homework is "tech time." Spend 20 minutes on either IXL or ST Math at home.

Making Tracks Monday

Hello 201 Families,

It is great to be back in 201 today.  We are working hard to prepare for Wednesday's Chapter 6 Math test. Last week, several days were dedicated to review. Today, I met with each child in a small group. I will do the same tomorrow, and kids will have the opportunity to ask questions about the homework.

  • finish the Chapter 6 Review
  • complete pages 169 and 170 in the Readers Notebook. This work is based upon The Life and Times of the Ant.
  • read, and record on your gold card.

  • We will take a Math Test on Wednesday. I will be adding a special review tab to the blog.
